Mai and Kenji Hodgson, originally from Canada, established their winery in Anjou after training in Japan and a growing passion for French natural wines. Before settling in Anjou, they gained experience working for renowned winemakers such as Mark Angeli and Benoît Courault, an experience that finally convinced her of the need to work organically at a minimum. In 2010, the couple acquired 1 hectare of Chenin, Grolleau and Cabernet Franc vines at La Faye d'Anjou, followed by the addition of 3 more hectares in 2011, including an exceptional plot called Clos des Grands Champs, whose soil composed of spilite (volcanic rock) recalls the famous Noëls de Montbenault of the Richard Leroy estate. At Domaine Hodgson, the emphasis is on upstream work, in the vineyards, in order to obtain the best possible quality of grapes. This approach allows for minimal intervention in the cellar and the production of pure and tasty wines. The winemaking is carried out in their cellar, located in the heart of the village of Rablay-sur-Layon, in a natural way, with minimal intervention. Among the estate's vintages, we find La Grande Pièce, a pure Grolleau Noir aged in barrels, offering aromas of red fruits and spices, with a fresh mouthfeel with fine tannins. The Faia vintage is a dry Chenin, aged in barrels, with notes of quince, lime blossom and hay. Les Aussigouins, a complex 100% Chenin, benefits from 2 years of aging and is distinguished by its aromas of white peach, pear and mirabelle plum, without the addition of sulfur. Finally, O Galarneau is a pure Cabernet Franc, the result of a blend of several plots, with natural fermentation in vats and aging for 12 months, offering a balance between indulgence, fruitiness and a spicy note on the finish. The Hodgson estate stands out for its philosophy rooted in tradition and terroir, seeking to reveal the distinctive character of Chenin and the old vines of the region. They stand out by refusing to follow the trends of modern viticulture, favouring the production of wines anchored in the typicity of the terroir.

Who are we ?

Created in 2010, Vinograf was taken over in July 2024 by Clara & Baptiste. With their experience with Marée Haute, they work to perpetuate Vinograf's strong commitments: a careful selection of established or novice artisan winemakers, all driven by the concern for excellence in their practices, in the magnification of terroirs and the search for authenticity of taste.

Several specifications correspond to these names. If we very often hear about sulphites, rightly accused of giving a headache, many other products can be used in the composition of so-called conventional wines.
Here is an overview of the different organic, biodynamic and natural specifications:
The organic specifications (AB label) prohibit any use of synthetic chemicals in the vineyards and in the winery. However, it allows some oenological crutches during winemaking. Sulfites, for example, are tolerated up to 100 mg/L for red wines and 150 mg/L for whites.

In biodynamics (Demeter or Biodyvin label), the winemaker not only works without synthetic chemicals, but also takes into account the lunar calendar for all the operations he carries out. He will also use biodynamic preparations (fermented horn dung, silica, plant herbal tea, etc.) to strengthen the vines. Overall, the winegrower seeks to include the cultivation of the vine in a global environment. Sulphites can go up to 70 mg/L for reds and 90 mg/L for whites.

In natural wine (Vin Method Nature label), the specifications specify the use of organic grapes, fermenting naturally using native yeasts (as in biodynamics). Natural wines see no input during all vinification and aging. Only minimum doses of SO2 are permitted (30 mg/L maximum), and must be mentioned by the winemaker. No brutal filtration or wine alteration techniques are permitted. We also find the name SAINS Wines which aims to completely prohibit the use of sulphites.

We strive to offer you wines from artisan wines, from estates on a human scale and often family-owned. And that's why we take the time to travel across France from vineyard to vineyard in search of these natural wines that thrill us.
We are particularly keen to introduce you to the new winegrowers of tomorrow who work tirelessly to offer us magnificent wines.
