Domaine Gauby

A mythical estate! It's located in Calce, 20 km northwest of Perpignan. It covers more than 85 hectares, including 45 hectares of vines (some of which are 120 years old). The other 40 hectares, surrounding these vines, offer a landscape of meadows, forests and garrigues, providing a real wealth of biodiversity. Here, the wild, arid and steep landscapes are particularly well preserved, offering us magnificent multiple terroirs of limestone, marl and schist, whose vertical strata allow the roots to plunge deep into the soil. This, among other things, is what gives Domaine Gauby wines their distinctive aromatic complexity.
The history of Domaine Gauby is a family story. It all began with 10 ares of vines cultivated on horseback, to which were added three hectares and then a total of 40 ha, purchased by Gérard Gauby, a former rugby international. By the mid-80s, Gérard had decided to work his estate with the purest respect for nature.
He decided not to coerce Nature, but to make her his ally: he abandoned all use of chemicals and began using homemade preparations based on plants (located on the estate), composts and essential oils. His work, which he readily describes as “peasant”, reveals all the subtleties of these grape varieties and, above all, of these great terroirs. Gérard Gauby's pioneering role as a natural winemaker in the Roussillon region is well deserved. Now, since 2008, it's his son Lionel's turn to take up the torch and benefit from the paths opened up by his father.
