Fred Niger took over from Guy Bossard, a famous winemaker of reference in Muscadet. The Domaine de l'Ecu is located in Landreau, more precisely a few kilometers east of Nantes, close to Jo Landron of Domaine Landron. The vintages of the Domaine de l'Ecu are today very famous. The estate has been certified organic since 1972, certified Demeter since 1998 and certified Biodyvin since 2014, it is a pioneering estate in French organic farming. For Fred, organic certification was not enough: he finds that the specifications are rather lax and in particular on winemaking. This is why he was very demanding with himself by seeking stricter certifications. Fred Niger pampers his plots on a daily basis and is very attentive to the preservation of his terroir and its soils. It is in Landreau that with his team they cultivate 24 hectares of vines as intelligently as possible. As some say, a great wine is born in the vineyard. It is when the soil work is mastered that the grapes are of quality. On the winemaking side, Fred is keen to produce wines with as little intervention as possible, natural wines without a shadow of an oenological input, with little or no sulphur. The particularity of the Domaine de l'Écu also lies in its aging in amphorae. Vinifying in amphorae requires a lot of work, monitoring and handling, but Fred Niger particularly appreciates this technique for the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir, permitted by the natural origin of the clay and the neutrality of the terracotta. For him, it is the culmination of a global approach linked to biodynamics. The Domaine de l'Écu has more than 50 vintages and the estate's vintages always reveal the different expressions of the terroir. Our favourite: Matris, a Chenin aged 12 months in amphorae with a beautiful complexity.

Who are we ?

Created in 2010, Vinograf was taken over in July 2024 by Clara & Baptiste. With their experience with Marée Haute, they work to perpetuate Vinograf's strong commitments: a careful selection of established or novice artisan winemakers, all driven by the concern for excellence in their practices, in the magnification of terroirs and the search for authenticity of taste.

Several specifications correspond to these names. If we very often hear about sulphites, rightly accused of giving a headache, many other products can be used in the composition of so-called conventional wines.
Here is an overview of the different organic, biodynamic and natural specifications:
The organic specifications (AB label) prohibit any use of synthetic chemicals in the vineyards and in the winery. However, it allows some oenological crutches during winemaking. Sulfites, for example, are tolerated up to 100 mg/L for red wines and 150 mg/L for whites.

In biodynamics (Demeter or Biodyvin label), the winemaker not only works without synthetic chemicals, but also takes into account the lunar calendar for all the operations he carries out. He will also use biodynamic preparations (fermented horn dung, silica, plant herbal tea, etc.) to strengthen the vines. Overall, the winegrower seeks to include the cultivation of the vine in a global environment. Sulphites can go up to 70 mg/L for reds and 90 mg/L for whites.

In natural wine (Vin Method Nature label), the specifications specify the use of organic grapes, fermenting naturally using native yeasts (as in biodynamics). Natural wines see no input during all vinification and aging. Only minimum doses of SO2 are permitted (30 mg/L maximum), and must be mentioned by the winemaker. No brutal filtration or wine alteration techniques are permitted. We also find the name SAINS Wines which aims to completely prohibit the use of sulphites.

We strive to offer you wines from artisan wines, from estates on a human scale and often family-owned. And that's why we take the time to travel across France from vineyard to vineyard in search of these natural wines that thrill us.
We are particularly keen to introduce you to the new winegrowers of tomorrow who work tirelessly to offer us magnificent wines.
